Bringing on
the Fun: The Bulletin's Family Fun Zone
When you're organizing a cakewalk, it pays to hire a
professional. Knowing this, The Bulletin asked grassrootsPR to organize
the Family Fun Zone at the 2004 Deschutes County Fair, and each year
since. In addition to planning sack races, pie-eating contests and tug
of war for this annual, five-day event, grassrootsPR has coordinated
with vendors to provide hands-on science activities, robotics
demonstrations, and bicycle safety events.
Each August, scores of children enter hula hoop contests and
gallop in stick-horse barrel races, while hundreds of spectators cheer
on jalapeno eaters, three-legged racers and apple bobbers. Sponsorships
allow The Bulletin to offer $5 helicopter rides. grassrootsPR's
organizing efforts draw kudos from nearby vendors, Fair officials and
local families. Oregon Fairs Association and a national newspaper
association have recognized The Family Fun Zone with awards.
