Advocating
for Tax Reform - Coalition Building
As
part of the Fund Oregon's Future Today campaign, Grassroots PR organized
community activists in Central and Eastern Oregon to press for tax
reform in Oregon that is fair, stable, adequate and viable. Working
with teachers and school administrators, business owners and union
members, low-income workers and social justice advocates, we generated
dozens of legislative contacts, op-eds and letters to the editor
from Central and Eastern Oregonians. At a July 4 booth, we educated
hundreds of voters on Oregon's tax structure and generated more
than 100 personal postcards to Governor Kulongoski. Grassroots PR
also helped Bend Education Association organize a "Cuts Hurt"
media event, bringing attention to cuts in school funding.
When
Measure 30 made the ballot, Grassroots PR switched gears to organize
a highly successful volunteer "pitch-in" to kick-off the
Yes on 30: For Our Oregon campaign. This collaborative event with
SEIU and COCAAN was covered by bend.com and the local television
station, Z-21. Throughout the campaign, we lined up business owners
and elected officials to address community groups and participate
in debates. In addition, we hosted meetings, organized phone banks
and conducted message trainings in Bend, Redmond, Pendleton and
Burns. In areas where we focused our efforts, Measure 30 fared significantly
better at the polls.
